At Murphy’s Paw, we fully support the ADOPT DON’T SHOP movement. In Japan alone, over 100,000 dogs and cats are destroyed annually in government pounds. Having visited these government pounds in person, and to see the atrocious way animals are kept and further disposed of, I cannot stress how important and vital it is for people to adopt rather than buy. Please consider heading to a reputable shelter and save a life.
Since volunteering and working at several non-profit organizations here in Japan and abroad, I have seen countless animals find their way into loving homes. Unfortunately, many shelter animals have endured neglect, trauma and even abuse and this can sometimes lead to behavioural issues. In order for these animals to help settle into their new homes, I am happy to offer one free training session (either in person for those living in Kobe, or virtually for those further away).
Two outstanding organizations I can fully and whole heartedly recommend are:
Animal Refuge Kansai (Kanto and Kansai) Animal Refuge Kansai (or ARK for short) is a non-profit organization founded by my good friend and mentor Ms. Elizabeth Oliver. Having started ARK in 1990, Liz has helped rescue and rehome over 6,000 dogs, cats and other animals throughout the nation. I am proud to be affiliated with such a wonderful organization for more than six years now and I encourage those wishing to adopt (or to volunteer) to check out their website.

Heart Tokushima (Shikoku) is another fantastic non-profit organization founded by my wonderful friend Susan Mercer. Susan started Heart in 2006 and has since rescued and rehomed numerous animals. She also runs educational programs on the importance of spay/neuter in hopes to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats in the region and elsewhere. Her shelter currently houses many adorable dogs and cats who are often saved from death row and are all looking for their happily ever after. Perhaps you will meet your next best friend at Heart!
